Easy Knitting Lace Pattern – Zen Throw Blanket

Easy Knitting Lace Pattern Blanket

Why Knit in Lace?

I have a brand new blanket project to share! The Zen Throw is something that’s been brewing in my mind for a while. I sometimes get requests for easy lace knitting patterns, and as a result, I wanted to create a blanket knit in lace that is stylish, cozy, and fun to knit up.

I know that for some knitters lace knitting sounds like a headache. But did you know that knitting lace patterns can be the ultimate zen experience? They are challenging enough to keep you engaged and in the zone, so that your mind can take a break from the daily stresses of life. And then you get to create intricate, delicate designs that look way more complicated than they actually are. Practicing lace knitting is a great way to level up your knitting skills and end up with some gorgeous, show-off-worthy pieces.

Also, since it is the summer time right now, a light and airy throw is the perfect project to decorate your home! This throw looks gorgeous draped over the sofa or arm chair. It’s also great to wrap up in for cooler evenings spent outdoors.

The Design – A Simple Lace Stitch

The pattern for the Zen Blanket alternates rows of ridged lace, with a mix of stockinette and garter stitch to create a squishy, stretchy fabric that is incredibly cozy to cuddle up with. I know that knitting a large blanket may seem daunting – especially when trying out a new lace knitting pattern, but don’t worry! This blanket is fun to knit, and the simple lace stitch pattern will have you reaching for your needles when you just want to relax and knit something repetitive. Knitting can sometimes put me in a meditative state, and this pattern definitely did this for me…. which is why I named it the Zen blanket!

I chose to work with Knit Picks Brava worsted weight yarn for this project to keep the cost down, while still creating a soft, high quality fabric. I love that Brava doesn’t break the bank, but still feels like a luxury yarn. My skin has been extra dry and sensitive lately, which means that itchy acrylic yarns just wont do!

Finished blanket measures:  68” long X 30” wide.  This blanket has some stretch to it, and a result, your measurements may vary depending on how you lay the blanket down before measuring.  When I measured, I tried my best not to stretch it at all.

Zen Throw – Pattern Instructions:

Notes before you start knitting:

The blanket is knit flat in rows, using circular knitting needles to hold the large number of stitches.

We begin by casting on the longest edge, which is why there are so many cast-on stitches. The lace knitting rows are worked using overs, which makes a hole in the fabric and adds a stitch to the row. To offset the added stitch, the yarn over is followed by knitting the next two stitches together.

If this is your first project working with lace stitches, it is a good idea to practice on a small swatch (any odd number of stitches) before beginning your blanket.

Cast on 197 Stitches.

Rows 1-3: Purl all stitches.

Row 4: K1; *yo, skpo; repeat from * to end of row.

Rows 5-7: Purl all stitches.

Row 8: K1; *yo, k2tog; repeat from * to end of row.

Rows 9-11: Purl all stitches.

Row 12: K1; *yo, skpo; repeat from * to end of row.

Rows 13-15: Purl all stitches.

    1. The pattern repeat is 2 stitches, to make smaller or larger add or subtract in groups of 2, maintaining an odd number cast on.

  1. I made this pattern for a friend as a housewarming gift, and have plans to make another for myself! It is a fun knit.
