Easy Daisy Crochet Flower Coasters: The Perfect Summer Crochet Project

I designed this Easy Daisy Flower Coaster pattern because I wanted a project that captured everything I love about summer crocheting. When the weather is warm, I find myself reaching for smaller projects that I can pick up for a few minutes while enjoying my afternoon coffee on the deck or relaxing outside with a glass of wine in the evening. As much as I love making blankets, they’re not exactly ideal when it’s 30°C outside! I wanted to create something that was quick, colourful, and satisfying to finish in an afternoon.

One of my favourite parts of designing is sitting down with a blank chart and seeing what takes shape. Lately, those charts have been turning into pixel art, and I can’t seem to stop creating new colourwork motifs. This little daisy was one of those designs that came together almost immediately. It has a cheerful, retro feel that reminds me of sunny days, fresh flowers, and bright summer colours. As soon as I finished charting it, I knew it would make the perfect coaster.

Colour Ideas for Your Crochet Flower Coasters

One of my favourite things about this pattern is how much the look changes with different colour combinations. The samples shown here use bright, cheerful colours for a retro-inspired feel, but the possibilities are endless. Try soft sage green and cream for a more modern, minimalist look, navy and white for a classic coastal style, or warm terracotta and oatmeal for a cozy, earthy palette. They’re also a fantastic stash-busting project since each coaster only uses a small amount of yarn. Mix and match colours to create a unique set, or make several in coordinating shades for a beautiful handmade gift.

I chose We Crochet CotLin DK weight yarn for these coasters because I wanted them to be beautiful and practical. Since coasters are something you’ll use every day, I wanted a yarn that would hold its shape well, show off the colourwork, and stand up to regular use. CotLin is a blend of cotton and linen, so it has a crisp stitch definition that really makes the daisy design pop. It’s also durable, absorbent, and easy to care for, making it an ideal choice for home décor projects like this. If you don’t have CotLin on hand, any DK weight cotton or cotton-blend yarn with good stitch definition will work well. Just try to choose colours with plenty of contrast so the flower design stands out clearly.

Learn Tapestry Crochet with This Easy Flower Coaster Pattern

These coasters are worked using the tapestry crochet technique. If you’ve never tried tapestry crochet before, don’t let that scare you away! It looks impressive, but once you understand the basics, it’s surprisingly straightforward. Instead of changing colours and leaving lots of loose ends to weave in, you’ll carry the unused yarn inside your stitches as you crochet. This creates a thick, sturdy fabric that’s perfect for coasters, and because the unused yarn is hidden inside your stitches, there are no floats on the back. The result is a clean, reversible coaster that looks great from either side.

The entire pattern is worked in single crochet, making it an approachable introduction to colourwork. The only extra skill is learning when to switch colours and how to carry the second strand of yarn, and after a few rows it quickly becomes second nature. I also recommend crocheting with a slightly firmer tension to help keep the carried colour hidden inside your stitches for the cleanest finish.

If tapestry crochet is new to you, please watch my step-by-step YouTube tutorial (above) where I walk you through the technique from start to finish. In the video, I’ll show you how to hold both yarns, when to change colours, and how to crochet over the unused strand so your work stays neat and reversible. It’s the same technique used in this pattern, so you’ll be ready to make these coasters with confidence.

How to Read the Chart

  • When reading the pattern grid, odd-numbered rows are right-side (front) rows and even-numbered rows are wrong-side (back) rows.
  • Read right-side rows from right to left.
  • Read wrong-side rows from left to right.
  • Print the grid and highlight each row as you complete it to help keep your place.
  • Work every row with both strands of yarn to maintain consistent gauge and tension.
  • Crochet tightly to help prevent the carried colour from showing through the stitches.
  • On right-side rows, hold the unused yarn at the back of your work.
  • On wrong-side rows, hold the unused yarn at the front of your work.
  • Crochet over the unused yarn with each single crochet to avoid floats and create a reversible coaster.
