Modern Knit Baby Blanket Pattern

When I started this website, pretty much all of my knitting patterns were baby blankets. And they are still my most popular patterns to this day! I know that many of you share my passion for knitting baby blankets to gift or donate – love your kind hearts ❤️! Which is why I have decided to dedicate this summer to designing and sharing baby blanket patterns. To kick off this summer of baby blankets, I’m sharing a simple diagonal seed stitch baby blanket pattern. My goal with this design was to create a modern baby blanket knitting pattern that can be enjoyed by both beginner knitters, as well as those with years of experience.

Keeping it Easy – A Knit Baby Blanket Pattern for Everyone!

You’ll be happy to hear that this particular baby blanket pattern only requires knit and purl stitches. No other special techniques are required! If you can knit in stockinette stitch, then you can knit this blanket. This pattern is a wonderful project for new knitters looking to challenge themselves by mixing together knits and purls to create texture.

Since this blanket is knit with a worsted weight yarn, it builds up quickly. I chose to work with Knit Picks Brava Tweed Worsted Weight Yarn. When Knit Picks released the Tweed Line of Brava, I couldn’t wait to try it out. I love Brava’s Affordability and huge choice of colours. In the end, I was super happy and couldn’t wait to take the photos for this post! The tweed adds gorgeous visual depth that goes great with textured knits. Plus, the Brava line is machine washable, making it ideal for knit baby blankets that stand the test of time!

Share and Inspire!

I hope you love this pattern as much as I enjoyed creating it! If you do, feel free to share the link to this page on your social media platforms or Pinterest account. Sharing not only helps more knitters discover these patterns, but it also supports my work in a huge way.

I’m truly grateful for all of you who help spread the word about this site and my patterns. Your support means the world to me!

Pattern Notes

This baby blanket is worked flat from the bottom up. Due to the large number of stitches, circular knitting needles with a long cord are used.

To alter the width of this baby blanket, cast on a multiple of 16 plus the 8 border stitches. For example, the blanket this pattern was made for is 16 X 8 + 8 = 136 sts.

Odd numbered rows are the right side, and even numbered rows are the back side of blanket.

  1. I love this blanket. The first time I saw it I knew I wanted to make it but couldn’t find a tweed yarn that I liked. I have found one now and o have started going through the pattern to get prepared for it and I am wondering if I can use size 9 needles or even an 8. Will that wreck the special qualities of this blanket? Thank you in advance.

  2. I love this blanket! I knit lapghans for one of the Oncology clinics here and would really like to add this to my patterns. However I would make this wider.
Can you provide multiples for this pattern? I’m not good at figuring that out!
    Thanks ever so much! ❤

    1. Hi Sue, thanks for the question! This pattern requires a multiple of 16 plus 8 (the 8 sts are the border stitches – 4 on each side -so if you want to make the border wider, keep that in mind). Enjoy the pattern!

    1. Hi Michelle, Thank you for the kind words and you are most welcome! Enjoy the pattern ❤️
