Chunky Crochet Blanket Pattern

I hope you enjoy this free cozy chunky crochet blanket pattern as much as I did creating it! This is one of those patterns that once you nail the first few rows, you can completely zone out – and before you know it, you have made huge progress. The stitch that I used is a simple alternating front and back post double crochet, which creates a really neat texture and doesn’t require much thought. Plus with chunky yarn, it builds super fast and will keep you warm while you work on it!

Chunky Blanket Yarn
Choosing yarn is my favourite part of beginning a new crochet project. When you’re deciding on which yarn to use for following a chunky crochet blanket pattern like this one, think about who it’s is for and how it’ll be used. It’s important to look a the fibre content.
I find that acrylic yarn is soft, budget-friendly, and machine washable, while wool is warm with great stitch memory (but can be itchy and cause allergic reactions for some people). Other fibres that are great for chunky crochet blankets are bamboo and cotton. Many yarn brands will even combine different fibres, so it’s super important to understand the pros and cons of the fibre content of your yarn before committing to it.
You will also want to check care instructions. For example, if the blanket is for a baby or a high-traffic couch throw, then machine washable and dryer friendly is the best option.
For my blanket, I decided to go with Painbox Yarns Simply Chunky for a couple of reasons. First, they have so many colors to choose from, so I was able to get the exact look I had in mind. Also, throws/afghans can be expensive to make with all of the yarn required, hence I was really attracted by the low price of this yarn. And for an added bonus, it is washable and can also go in the dryer!
