Crochet The Perfect Triangle Shawl (or Scarf) this Fall

Its finally fall up here in Canada, so I thought it would be fun to make an easy triangle shawl crochet pattern to welcome the cooler weather.  My favourite thing about this light weight shawl is that it has the perfect drape to wrap around your neck and double as a scarf!

Why You’ll Love this Pattern

If you are a new crocheter, you will love this pattern because it only requires double crochet stitches and chains. The trickiest part is making the magic ring at the beginning, which I demonstrate in the video tutorial that goes along with this pattern. You can find the tutorial on the Leelee Knits YouTube Channel. I’ve also added it to this page with the written pattern and I encourage you to watch it and follow along to begin your own shawl.

This pattern is so much fun to crochet because it has just enough variation to keep things interesting without being overwhelming, making it a perfect project to relax with while still building your skills.

Pattern FAQs

What is a Magic Ring, and how do I make one?

A Magic Ring (or Magic Circle) is a technique used to start crocheting in the round. It creates a tightly closed centre, ideal for the beginning of this pattern. To make a Magic Ring, wrap the yarn around your fingers to form a loop, pull up a loop through the centre, then chain and start working your stitches into this loop.

How many rows do I crochet in total?

You’ll work a total of 41 rows. Begin with the instructions for Rows 1-5, then repeat Rows 2-5 nine more times for a total of 41 rows.

Why does the pattern say “CH3 (counts as first DC)”?

The “CH3 (counts as first DC)” means that the chain 3 at the beginning of the row is treated as if it’s a double crochet stitch. This chain gives the edge of the pattern an even look and helps maintain consistent height in the stitch pattern.

What does “CH2 sp” mean?
“CH2 sp” refers to the chain-2 space created by chaining 2 in previous rows. This is where you’ll be working additional stitches in the pattern, especially at the center to create the increase.

How do I know where to increase stitches?
Increases are made within the chain-2 spaces, specifically in the middle chain-2 space in each row. In Row 2, you’ll add “2DC, CH2, 2DC” in this center chain-2 space, and similar instructions are followed in other rows to maintain the pattern.

What does “repeat from *” mean?
These instructions let you know that there is a repeating section in the pattern. After the * symbol, you’ll repeat the instructions that follow until you reach the “;”, then continue with the rest of the pattern.

Can I adjust the size of my crochet shawl?
Yes, you can make the shawl/scarf larger by continuing the row repeats (Rows 2-5) as many times as you like. However, be sure to have extra yarn on hand if you plan to increase the size.
