Summer is at an end up here in Canada, and that means more time spent inside with our crochet WIPs! I thought it would be fun this month to join the Hobbii home collection challenge and design a project to make my home a little more cozy this fall. If you haven’t heard of Hobbii, they are a wonderful online yarn store based out of Denmark, and they offered to provide the yarn for my design! I was tempted to create another blanket, but I decided to create a tapestry crochet rug pattern instead. Our front entrance has been looking bare without a rug, and this was the perfect opportunity to complete the space!
Yarn Choice:
I chose to work with the Hobbii Ribbon yarn line for this rug. I liked that it is 100% cotton, and the texture is perfect for rugs! Ribbon yarn is a flat thin yarn that is about a centimetre wide and is popular for home decor projects like rugs, baskets, pillow covers, and pot holders. I chose to go with a dark grey and off white combination to suit our home, but they have a ton of colours to choose from for anyone who prefers more colour!
Design Inspiration:
This is my first rug pattern, and I had a lot of fun coming up with the design! I just love geometric patterns (there’s something very satisfying about how it all comes together to create a big picture from smaller shapes), so I knew where I wanted to start. After browsing our local home decor stores, I decided to work with clean lines and incorporate diamonds into the design. I’m extremely happy with end result, but now I can’t decide where to put the rug! When I was photographing it, I liked it under the sofa, at the front door, but also in the kitchen under the table! There are a few places where I’d love to place it…. I guess the only solution is to make another one!
Let me know what you guys think, and if you’d like to see more rug patterns (or tapestry crochet patterns in general) from me.

CH: Chain.
Tapestry Crochet Tutorial:
This rug is worked using the tapestry crochet technique. If you are not familiar with tapestry crochet, it’s a good idea to watch the video tutorial below before you start:
Pattern Notes:
- When reading the pattern grid, note that the odd numbered rows are the right side, and the even numbered rows are the wrong side.
- Right side rows are to be read right to left.
- Wrong side rows are to be read left to right.
- All rows are worked with both strands of yarn to keep the gauge and tension consistent. It is best to crochet tightly to avoid the second color being seen through the stitches.
- When working a right side row, hold Color B yarn to the back of your work.
- When working a wrong side row, hold Color B yarn to the front of your work.
- Crochet over the second yarn (yarn not in use) when working each SC to avoid floats.
Pattern Instructions:
With Color A, CH 120 (119 plus 1 for the turning chain). Follow the grid belwo starting at bottom right for row 1 and changing to Color B for the gray cells. Each cell represents one SC, and each row represents one row of crochet.
For 72” X 36” rug, repeat rows 2-31 three times (end on row 28 for the last repeat so that the top and bottom are symmetrical). Add one last row of colour A for a total of 88 rows.
For 72” X 48” rug, repeat rows 2-31 four times (end on row 28 for the last repeat so that the top and bottom are symmetrical). Add one last row of colour A for a total of 118 rows.
Finishing:
Cut the yarn for Colour B, and SC around the border of the rug for one round with colour A (note: when crocheting around the border, remember to place 3 SC in each corner stitch to prevent the corners from puckering in). Once you have completed one round of SC, fasten off and weave in any loose ends.

Hi…i am a bit confused..why does it say to repeat 3 times in the middle of the grid?
Do you think i can repeat rows 2-31 more than 4 times to get a bigger rug? Or will it look awful
Hi Brittany, Yes I think that would work well.
I was looking for a pattern last fall for this exact ribbon yarn and for a size just a foot longer than this! I needed an 8″ runner rug. I wish I would have found this then. Instead I bought some and did my own thing, not anything fancy, but what I did has a marble effect.
I bought too much yarn, so I’m going to check to see if I have enough to make this as an extra one so I can switch them out as they need washing.
Amazing! I love this yarn, and I have a lot left from my order so I may make another rug pattern this spring!
Isn’t this crazy expensive? If I need 17 skeins and they cost 14 € each, this ends up to 238 € for the yarn..
Yes, it is! It looks like they have increased their prices since I published this pattern. They do have sales frequently if you are able to wait. Another option is to try another brand of ribbon yarn. I can’t tell you which one to use as this is the only one that I have tried. I can say that the quality of Hobbi Ribbon is excellent. I use the rug that I made in my bathroom as a mat for when I get out of the tub and it still looks good as new.
