Cluster Stitch Crochet Baby Blanket Pattern

Cluster Stitch Crochet Baby Blanket

If you’re looking for a fun, quick project then you’ll love making this cluster stitch crochet baby blanket.  I designed this blanket to be worked with a large hook and bulky weight yarn, so that it builds up super fast for those of you who don’t have the patience for larger projects.  An added bonus – this thick and soft blanket is sure to keep your baby cozy and warm in the upcoming winter months.

When I heard that one of my favourite inexpensive worsted weight yarns – Knit Picks Mighty Stitch – is now available in a bulkier weight, I couldn’t wait to purchase some and try it out!  I’m definitely happy with the result.   Although its more like a heavy aran weight, rather than the bulky that its advertised as, this yarn is incredibly soft and I absolutely loved the colour selections.

I’ve created a video tutorial for how to crochet the cluster stitch as well, which I’ve embedded below on this page with the free pattern. You can also watch the video on the Leelee Knit YouTube Chanel at the following link: Cluster Stitch Crochet Tutorial.

Work around the border of the blanket evenly in single crochet for 2 rounds.  Make sure that you do 3 SC in each corner of the border.  I found an excellent article explaining how to work a single crochet border in detail.

Fasten off and weave in the ends!

  1. I am so glad to see this blanket! I have friends expecting babues. It is always nice to have a nice pattern to go to.

  2. Hi, while doing row 3 do i have to skip next CL every time..(* CH1, skip next CL..). It tightens up when I do like that..

    1. You are correct. Directions for row 3 should read: SC in first DC, SC in first ch-1 space; * CH1, SC in next CL; repeat from * across, ending last rep with SC in turning chain space, SC in 3rd chain of turning chain; CH4, turn.
At least I think so – how can one SC in ch-1 spaces from the previous row when there are none? If you skip every other cluster your work will pull in and you won’t have enough stitches to work in on the following row.
That’s how I’m crocheting mine and it’s turning out just like the picture.

  3. Hi Leelee,

Are you able to do a u tube tutorial of the first few rows as I’m still learning to crochet and would love to crochet this blanket for a friend that is expecting in April. Thank you Christina

      1. Thank you so much for the tutorial- this blanket is BEAUTIFUL! Did you use the Blush colored yarn from Mighty Stich? Love this color! Thank you!

  4. i would love to do this blanket but how can i crochet and then have a soft blanket? my blankets are always rough and not cosy and soft. Can you help?

    1. I would recommend using a very soft yarn. I used KnitPicks Mighty stitch yarn and the blanket came out very soft. Also, if you go up a hook size, that sometimes helps make the stitches less bumpy.

  5. Thank you for this pattern. I am struggling with this a little. One side of my blanket seems to be getting shorter. I can’t figure out what I’m doing wrong. Please help!

    1. I seem to be having this problem as well and was hoping to find some help in the comments. I’ve pulled a lot of rows out and am paying close attention to my stitches on the edges, but still having some problems. Do you have any thoughts on this? Thank you!

  6. Thank you once again for this pattern. I love the pink shade. I love to crochet for babies as it takes less time and i won’t give up. Keep up the good work. God bless.

    1. Hi Aimee, yes you can – however I would probably go up a hook size. Also keep in mind that the blanket will be bigger too if you use a bulkier yarn.

  7. I LOVE your baby blanket patterns!! Everytime I’m googling baby blankets, and see one I absolutely adore, it turns out to be yours!!
I made the white one with the lilac border for a baby shower gift, and it was a hit. THANK YOU!!

    1. Awe, this comment made my day! I have a few more in the works that I hope to post in the coming months 🙂 so keep checking back!

  8. This was not a new stitch for me, but a new way of using it. It is really a nice pattern for a blanket. I used Caron Jumbo Rose wood which is a variegated beige dusty pink and dark pink. It worked up so pretty that I kept inspired to finish it in little over a month watching TV. I added a scalloped shell as a border. I’ll post pics to my Ravelry page – CraftyPerri

  9. Its really a good blog on children accessories. I appreciate your article. Its important to use the best accessories for children. This blog is really helpful to give a light in this issue. So thanks for sharing all that important information.

  10. I made this for my sons kitties to lay on. Thank you for sharing your passion for free. I wish you a wonderful New Year!

  11. Hi. Lovely pattern! I’m excited to try it. Can you clarify which yarn you used? Your link is to the regular Mighty Stitch yarn, but in your description you mention the Mighty Stitch Bulky yarn. Both come in the blush color, but the recommended hook size is different. Based on the J book you specify in the pattern, I assume you used the regular Mighty Stitch, not the bulky, but I wanted to be sure. Thanks!

      1. Thanks for clarifying! The bulky yarn says to use sizes K-M for hooks, but I guess the J size works? I’m new to crochet and still figuring it all out. Your patterns are inspiring!

        1. You are most welcome! Usually that is the case, but I find that the mighty stitch bulky is not as thick as most bulky yarns. You will find that yarn weights are a little inconsistent between brands. Knit Picks generally is thinner in each category for some reason.

  12. I plan to make this for a friends baby here soon. She lives in Texas so I want to use a light weight breathable yarn. I’m wondering if Hobby Lobby’s I love this cotton would be to small for this pattern? Or if you have other suggestions for a light weight yarn. Thanks!

This is such a sweet pattern I’ve been meaning to make this for a while I just didn’t have anyone with a new baby to make it for.

    1. Hi Halla,
That should be fine, just remember to go down on the hook size to what the yarn specifies. As well, you may need to make your beginning chain longer so that the blanket is the same width.

  13. Hi!!! Just finished making this blanket tonight ? Love the pattern! Unfortunately, I am having some issues with the border. I followed your instruction but it gets tight in the sides and the corners are a little pointy with the 3 sc; if I do 2 sc, the corner curls. After observing your picture above, it appears you sc more than one around each “dc or chain 4”. Can you please help me? Thank you!!!

    1. Hi JoAnna,
Yes that is correct. When working down the sides for the border – if you are working in to a turning chain that is a double crochet, the rule of thumb is to make two SC in the turning chain. So on the sides, work two SC around each dc or chain 4.

In the corners, I worked 3 sc into each corner stitch.

      Hope this helps!

  14. Can you please tell me what ply this yarn is? I’m going to see if I can find something similar at my local wool store.

  15. Thank you for the FREE pattern. I have decided to make some blankets for our local hospital NICU and I am going to try this for the first one. I just love it…

    1. Thank tou for the pattern! I will make this blanket for my new babyborn girl. Can you tell me how much yarn did you used? Thanks a lot!

  17. Dear Leelee,
I am a little confused as to how to do the 3rd row, are you able to write it out for me please? I would really appreciate that as I have a head injury and struggle with some things and as I have already printed off the free pattern I don’t seem to be able to include the changes needed for the 3rd row.
I have taught myself how to crochet and find that things need to be clear and concise for me.

  18. Thank you for this pattern. It’s beautiful, and it works up very easily. I am wanting to use different colors. In your opinion, would you change the color on the sc row or the CL row? I’m thinking the sc row, but since I’m not an expert crocheter, I thought I’d ask your opinion.

  19. Hi.
    I have finished the blanket.
But should I finish on a row of clusters or a row of singles before I do the border?
    Thanks

  20. I would like to do wide stripes in 3 colors. Any estimate on how many rows total so I can figure this out? Gorgeous pattern. Thanks!

    1. You’re welcome! The best way to figure it out would be to divide the total length by 3 and simply crochet for that amount of rows in each colour.

  21. Have you ever tried making this baby blanket with a cotton yarn? If so, which one….and did you like the results?

  22. I started a baby blanket with this pattern, using premier toy box, but the stictches were too thick/sturdy for a blanket, so I made lemonade from lemons by turning it into a bathroom rug! Now, I’m finishing a bath mat because I ordered 12 skeins of the yarn. I used 4 for the rug for in front of the sink, and now 6 for the bath mat for the tub.

  23. Thank you so much for a pretty, yet easy, pattern! I’ve made several of the blankets now, although on 2 I switched out the border for a simple ruffled border with a baby chenille yarn.

For anyone that’s interested, you can multi-strand 2 yarns easily with this pattern – I used a J hook, and Paton’s beehive baby sport in Precious Pink, paired with Lion Brand Ice Cream Big Scoop in Strawberry. Doing that “calms down” the ombre of the Big Scoop.

It also works up nicely with Premier Puzzle yarn; I’ve used the Dominoes color with good results.

  24. Hi:

I have done a few blankets with this pattern, and it is fantastic!

I am currently on medical leave recovering from major surgery, so I thought I would use up some yarn scraps. Have you ever tried this pattern using baby sport yarn? The blanket I started this morning will be pink and white – I’m using a strand of pink and a strand of white together. So far, it looks pretty neat if anyone else wants to try it!

  25. I bought the mighty stitch yarn from the knitpicks website but there was no choice for a BULKY mighty stich. I received the yarn today and it is super fine and very soft. Does the company not make the bulky yarn anymore? What substitution would I use.? Packaging on yarn states 208 yards/100 gram. Back states I-k, 11-14 sc=4”
