If you love working with chunky yarn, then I think you’re really going to enjoy this simple chunky basketweave baby blanket knitting pattern! I designed this baby blanket to be easy for beginner knitters, yet still fun for anyone who loves to knit, regardless of skill level. And, because it is knit with chunky yarn, this blanket builds up quickly – leaving you with a sense of accomplishment even after knitting just a few rows!

The basketweave pattern is super fun, and, most importantly for beginner knitters, it only requires that you know how to knit and purl. No special knitting techniques required! I know that many of my website followers are new to knitting, and as a result, I’m trying to share as many beginner friendly patterns as I can to help you gain confidence in your knitting abilities.

Yarn Choice:

The yarn that I chose to work with with for blanket is Knit Picks Swish Bulky Weight Yarn, which is perfect for cozy blankets that are intended to be snuggled up under. I’m always impressed with the quality of the Swish line of yarn, which is 100% superwash Merino wool and is a dream to knit with.

Notes:

This baby blanket is worked flat from the bottom up. Circular knitting needles with a long cord are used to hold the large number of stitches.

To alter the width of this baby blanket, cast on a multiple of 24 plus the 16 border stitches. For example, the blanket this pattern was made for is 24 X 5 + 16 = 136 sts.

Odd numbered rows are the right side, and even numbered rows are the back side of blanket.

  1. I don’t like to knit with chunky yarn. Could this be madele strands of worsted weight yarn? Do you think it would be the same size? I’m going on 80 years-old, and I want to make some baby things and put them away for my granddaughter for when she marries, and when she has her first baby. It’s the size I want to make…crib blanket size…and the pattern looks like a quick and easy one to make. Want to get some things made before my arthritis gets too bad to knit. Thank you for any help you can give me.

    1. Hi Gayle! Yes, you definitely can knit this blanket with a couple of strands of worsted weight yarn held together. The fabric may end up being a bit more dense but work a small swatch first and see how it looks and feels is my suggestion.

  2. I’m making this as my first real knitting project as a gift for my best friend’s first baby. I’m so thrilled with being able to craft something so special and beautiful. Thanks for sharing this pattern. So far so great!

  3. Hi. I want to make a lapghan for summer. I’ve made several of your lapghans with bulky yarn for winter and love your patterns. What actually makes the chunky basket weave a baby blanket? I would like that for summer or the country cable. Since they are made with bulky though I wonder if they’re too warm for summer.
Thank you for all your beautiful patterns.

    1. You’re most welcome Sharon! I think this one would be thick for summer, but you can make it with a lighter weight yarn and smaller needles. If you use worsted weight yarn, try 6.6mm needs to create a good drape ❤️
