October is, hands down, the most beautiful month of the year. The vibrant autumn colours are just breathtaking! This time of year always inspires me to add a pop of colour to my wardrobe with hand-knit scarves, hats, and mittens. Today, I’m excited to share a simple, yet eye catching scarf pattern with you. I chose a golden-yellow yarn because it perfectly captures the colour that comes to mind when I think of October, which is why I named the pattern after this stunning month!
I designed this pattern to create a soft, scrunchy fabric that will keep you cozy warm on chilly fall days. The body of the scarf is created with the stockinette ridge stitch, with the ends worked in a simple 2X2 rib. You will love this pattern if you’d like to move beyond simple knits and purls and practice the basic kfb (knit front and back), and k2tog (knit two together) stitches. Since you’ll be repeating the same 4 rows over and over, you will be confident in your ability to work a simple increase and decrease by the time you finish your scarf!
Yarn Choice:
I chose to work with Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran in Mustard Yellow for this scarf because in addition to the excellent quality and affordability of Paintbox Yarns, I just love this colour! I highly recommend trying out Paintbox Yarns Simply Aran line of yarns if you haven’t already. They have an incredible choice of colours and the yarn is so soft, it’s hard to believe that it is 100% acrylic!

Good Morning from Canada….I totally look forward to your patterns, I have folllowed you since my mom started teaching me to knit 6 years ago and you have me hooked….my mom taught me to do the Bobble stltch this summer and I am currently making your blanket using bobbles, love that. Just wanted to thank you for all you share that your knitting explanations are so helpful, I love knitting so much. Let me know if you ever create a blanket with a horse head on it, that will be a great project and will use on my horses!! Thanks for all you do.
Sheri
Hi Sheri! First off, a heartfelt “thank you” for being with me on this knitting journey since you started with your mom. It’s heartwarming to know that my patterns have found a special place in your knitting sessions. Bobble stitches are such fun, aren’t they? I’m thrilled you’re giving my bobble blanket a go!
I will definitely let you know if I make a blanket with a horse theme! Have a wonderful day ❤️
Are there any instructions you could give me for making the scarf narrower, say 6 inches wide?
Hi Monica,
Thank you for reaching out with your question. I’m happy to help you with the gauge details. Based on the given gauge of 19 stitches equaling 4 inches, we can estimate that each inch will require about 4.75 stitches. For a scarf that’s 6 inches wide, you would need approximately 28.5 stitches. As our pattern works in multiples of 2, you can round down to 28 stitches or up to 30 stitches for your cast-on. Either way should work beautifully for your scarf.
