Winter Crochet Hot Pads – Free Pattern

Crochet Hot Pads

Practical and Pretty: Crochet Hot Pads this Winter

Christmas is my favourite time of the year for so many reasons.  One of them is decorating our home to make it as festive as possible!  This year, I made these fun reindeer and snowflake hot pads to protect our table while adding to the festive feel. And while I did design them for the holidays, they look great on the table all winter long.

The Best Yarn for Hot Pads

To crochet these hot pads, you’ll need some dk weight cotton yarn. I used Paintbox Yarns Cotton DK yarn since I love their colour palette, but if you’re in a pinch then you can substitute with another cotton yarn of the same weight. The important thing is to stick with 100% cotton yarn. It’s super durable and can handle the heat, unlike acrylic, which might melt or warp if it gets too close to something hot. Cotton is also great for gripping steamy dishes because it’s absorbent and sturdy. Plus, it’s less flammable, so it’s safer to use around hot pots and pans. Basically, cotton yarn makes sure your hot pads do their job without any melty messes or surprises!

Easy and Fun to Make with Tapestry Crochet

These hot pads are made using the tapestry crochet method, which is a fun and easy way to create colourful patterns. In tapestry crochet, you work with two or more colours at the same time, carrying the unused yarn along as you crochet. This lets you switch colours seamlessly and creates a sturdy, double-layered fabric—perfect for hot pads! Don’t worry, it’s easier than it sounds because the only stitch you need to know is single crochet. If you can single crochet, you can do tapestry crochet!

If you’re new to tapestry crochet, be sure to check out my YouTube tutorial on How to Crochet with Two Colours before you start—it’ll help you feel confident and avoid any confusion. Honestly, it’s much easier than it looks, especially once you find your rhythm!

When reading the pattern grid, note that the odd numbered rows are the right side, and the even numbered rows are the wrong side.

  • It’s a good idea to print the grid and highlight the rows as they are completed.
  • Right side rows are to be read right to left
  • Wrong side rows are to be read left to right
  • All rows are worked with both strands of yarn to keep the gauge and tension consistent. It is best to crochet tightly to avoid the second color being seen through the stitches.
  • When working a right side row, hold secondary yarn color to the back of your work.
  • When working a wrong side row, hold secondary yarn color to the front of your work.
  • Crochet over the second yarn (yarn not in use) when working each SC to avoid floats and make potholders reversible.
