A Baby Blanket Crocheted With the Elizabeth Stitch – AKA Mini Bean Stitch

I can’t believe that it’s taken me so long to share a pattern crocheted with the Elizabeth Stitch, which is one of my go to stitches due to it’s simplicity and modern texture. The Elizabeth Stitch is also reversible, which makes it perfect for anything that needs to look great on both sides – like the blanket pattern that I’m sharing today!

The Elizabeth Stitch is often called the Mini Bean Stitch because it’s simply a smaller version of the traditional Bean Stitch, which is thicker and more textured. I love using the Elizabeth Stitch when I want a fabric that’s flatter and less dense, such as for blankets, pillows, and other home décor projects. It also works beautifully for accessories like mittens and hats!

How to Crochet the Elizabeth Stitch (Mini Bean Stitch)

The Elizabeth stitch is a great stitch for new crocheters because it has a one row repeat using the simple Mini Bean Stitch. The Mini Bean Stitch is created by working two partial stitches into the same space, which gives it a soft, pebbled texture. The loops overlap slightly to form a small “bean” shape, and a chain is added after each one to space them out evenly. The result is a reversible, squishy fabric with beautiful texture.

I made a video tutorial as well to help guide you along. You can find it on this page – just scroll down to the pattern. You can also watch it on the Leelee Knits YouTube Channel at the following link: Elizabeth Stitch Crochet Blanket Tutorial.

Notes & Video Tutorial

This blanket is crocheted in rows using the Elizabeth Stitch, which is worked by alternating the mini bean stitch with chain 1 spaces to create a beautifully textured, reversible crochet stitch.

The pattern starts with a row of single crochet, then transitions into the Elizabeth Stitch for the remaining rows. You’ll alternate between three colours to create the soft striped design. To finish, you will work one final row of single crochet to mirror the starting edge, followed by two rounds of a clean single crochet border.

I created a video tutorial to walk you through this pattern as well.

Colour Changes

Work five more rows with Colour A so that you have a total of 8 rows of Colour A. Then, repeat the colour sequence: 1B, 4C, 1B, 4A, 1C, 4B, 1C, 4A, six times in total (note:1B means 1 row of Colour B).

To change Colours Seamlessly for the next row:

Begin the last stitch of the current row with the old colour, but use the new colour to pull through the final loop to complete the stitch. Continue crocheting the next row with the new colour.

Once you have completed the last repeat of the colour sequence, work 3 more rows with Colour A, and then complete the final row as follows:

Final Row: CH1; SC in each st and ch to end of row, working last SC in top of ch3 space; CH1, turn.

Do not fasten off and continue to Border and Finishing instructions.

Border & Finishing

After completing the final row, add a border by single crocheting around the perimeter of the blanket as follows.

  • SC into each stitch of the final row. Make 3SC in the last stitch of the row before crocheting down the side so that the corner lays flat.
  • Continue to SC evenly along the border:
    • For the side edges: Make 1SC into the side of each row.
    • For the bottom edge: SC into each ch of the foundation chain.
    • Corners: Work 3SC instead of 1SC into the last stitch of each edge to prevent corners from bunching.
  • After completing the first round, join to the first sc of the round with a slip stitch. Then CH1 and SC in the same st and in each st around the border again for another round. Don’t forget to work 3SC in the last stitch of each edge.
  • Finish: Join to the first sc of the second round with a slip stitch, cut the yarn, fasten off, and weave in any remaining loose ends.

Finally, wet or steam block to measurements so that the blanket lays flat and then weave in loose ends. Congratulations, you have mastered the Elizabeth Stitch (aka Mini Bean Stitch) and your Pebble Beach Baby Blanket is complete!
