How to Knit the Broken Rib Stitch

The broken rib stitch is an easy two-row repeat that looks like 1×1 rib but a bit flatter. To knit this stitch, begin by casting on an even number of stitches and then follow the instructions below.

Knitting The Broken Rib Stitch:

The broken rib stitch is knit the same, regardless of weather you’re working in rows or in the round.

Row/Round 1: k1, p1 to end;

Row/Round 2: knit all stitches;

Then just repeat those two row/rounds until your fabric reaches the desired length!

Decreasing The Knit Broken Rib Stitch:

The most reliable way that I’ve found to decrease in broken rib is to use a central double decrease. Since broken rib alternates knits and purls every other row, a single decrease would throw off the rhythm; instead, decrease two stitches at once to keep the pattern aligned. In other words, use a central double decrease where you need shaping and the rib columns stay centered.

To knit a Central Double Decrease:

Step 1: Slip 2 stitches together from your left need to your right needle as if to knit.
Step 2: Then, knit the next stitch,
Step 3: Finally, pass slipped stitches over the stitch that you just knit.

Yarn Choice For This Pattern

I chose to work with Lion Brand Wool-Ease Aran Yarn for this pattern because I love the earthy colour scheme, but you can substitute with any aran or heavy worsted weight yarn to make your own hat. Here are some options that I recommend as substations if you cannot access Wool-Ease or just prefer another fibre content:
