What are Chevron Crochet Stitches?

Before we get to the tutorial, I’ll begin with a brief explanation of what it means when someone talks about a chevron crochet pattern, for those of you that are new to this method. The term chevron in crochet refers to using increases and decreases in a each row to create peaks and valleys, resulting in a wavy/zig-zag fabric.

Easy Chevron Crochet Pattern

It might sound a little technical at first, but here’s how it works:

  1. Increases (peaks): To create the top point of a zigzag, you’ll work two or three stitches into the same stitch — usually in the center of each peak. This adds width in that spot, pushing the fabric upward.
  2. Decreases (valleys): To form the dips or inward points, you’ll crochet two or more stitches together. For example you might use single crochet two together (sc2tog) if working with single crochet stitches, or double crochet two together (dc2tog) if working with double crochet stitches. This reduces the number of stitches and pulls the fabric downward.
  3. Even spacing between peaks and valleys: Between the increases and decreases, you’ll work a set number of regular stitches. This spacing is what keeps the chevron consistent and evenly spaced across the row.

To start a chevron project, your foundation chain usually needs to be a multiple of a certain number (depending on your pattern) plus a few extra stitches to account for turning or maintaining symmetry at the ends.

The combination of consistent increases and decreases gives you a balanced up-and-down wave across each row. And the more rows you add, the more dramatic and eye-catching the ripple effect becomes.
