This free simple slouchy knit hat pattern includes rounds of eyelets, resulting in an ultra feminine, stylish winter hat.
Every fall I try to come up with at least one new knit hat pattern. This year, since I’ve become obsessed with lace knitting, I knew I had to make a beanie that included some lace, yet is still warm enough for our chilly Canadian climate. I came across a purled eyelet stitch, and knew right away that it was what I was looking for!
This stitch not only adds the perfect amount of texture to spice up a basic stockinette stitch beanie, but it is also pretty easy – even for new knitters! I’d say that as long as you have a little bit of experience knitting in the round, you’ll find this pattern easy enough the first time you make the hat. And, once you realize how much fun this pattern is (and want to make a beanie in every colour) your hat will be flying off your needles!
Yarn Choice
The yarn that I chose to work with this time is Knit Picks Preciosa Tonal worsted weight yarn. This single ply yarn is made of 100% merino wool -which is perfect for keeping your ears toasty warm! I just love the slight tonal variation in this line, and am now obsessed! I only wish I’d ordered more colours! The hats in the photos pictured below are knit with the colours Ballet and Pewter.

Free Slouchy Knit Hat Pattern
Supplies/Materials:
To make one beanie, you will need:
- Size 4 (3.5 mm) 16” circular knitting needles.
- Size 7 (4.5 mm) 16” circular knitting needles.
- Size 7 (4.5 mm) double pointed knitting needles.
- 136 yards (approx. half a skein) of Knit Picks Preciosa Tonal worsted weight yarn. Colours in photos are Ballet and Pewter.
- Stitch markers.
- Scissors.
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends.
- Pompom (optional).
Size:
Adult (head circumference 22 inches).
Gauge:
3.5 stitches, 5 rows = 1 Inch in stockinette stitch with size 7 needles.
Abbreviations:
| k | Knit. |
| p | Purl. |
| sts | Stitches. |
| yrn | Yarn around needle. |
| P2tog | Purl two stitches together. |
| k2tog | Knit two stitches together. |
Notes:
This hat is knit in the round (from the bottom up) on circular knitting needles, switching to double pointed needles when necessary (during the decreasing of stitches for shaping the crown).

Slouchy Knit Beanie – Free Pattern Instructions:
With US Size 4/3.5 mm needles, cast on 90 sts. Place a stitch marker to mark the beginning of the round and join (being careful not to twist the stitches). Continue to Brim.
Brim:
Rounds 1-14: *K1, P1; repeat from * to end of round to create 1X1 ribbing for the brim.
Transfer stitches to size 7 (4.5mm) circular needles and continue to Body.
Body:
Round 1: Knit all sts.
Round 2: Purl all sts.
Round 3: *P2tog, yrn; repeat from * to end of round.
Round 4: Purl all sts.
Rounds 5, 6, 7: Knit all sts.
Round 8: Purl all sts.
Round 9: *P2tog, yrn; repeat from * to end of round.
Round 10: Purl all sts.
Round 11-17: Knit all sts.
Repeat rounds 2-17 one more time.
Begin Decreasing Rounds to shape the crown (switch to double pointed needles when necessary).
Decreasing Rounds:
Round 1: *P7, P2Tog; repeat from * to end of round (80 sts remain).
Round 2: *P2tog, yrn; repeat from * to end of round.
Round 3: Purl all sts.
Round 4: *K6, K2tog; repeat from * to end of round (70 sts remain).
Rounds 5 & 6: Knit all sts.
Round 7: *P5, P2Tog; repeat from * to end of round (60 sts remain).
Round 8: *P2tog, yrn; repeat from * to end of round.
Round 9: Purl all sts.
Round 10: *K4, K2tog; repeat from * to end of round (50 sts remain).
Rounds 11 & 12: Knit all sts.
Round 13: *K3, K2tog; repeat from * to end of round (40 sts remain).
Round 14: Knit all sts.
Round 15: *K2, K2tog; repeat from * to end of round (30 sts remain).
Round 16: Knit all sts.
Round 17: *K1, K2tog; repeat from * to end of round (20 sts remain).
Round 18: *K2tog; repeat from * to end of round (10 sts remain).
Cut yarn (leave a long tail) and pull through a yarn needle. Thread the yarn through the remaining stitches and pull tight to close the hole at the top of the hat. Tie a knot to secure and attach a pompom (or leave the hat as is). Weave in all loose ends and enjoy your new hand knit slouchy beanie!

I love this hat and would like to make it for my young nieces, would you know how many stitches to cast for a child’s hat (a 6 or 7 year old)?

Hi Sheila, The pattern requires a multiple of 10 so I would recommend casting on 70 or 80 sts… keep in mind that when you decrease to shape the top, that you would need to work that in. So if you have cast on 80 sts, then your first decrease row would be *P6, P2Tog; repeat from * to end of round (70 sts remain) instead of *P7, P2Tog; repeat from * to end of round (80 sts remain). hope that helps!

The extra stitch is required because of the PSSO right before it that reduces one stitch 🙂
Hope that makes sense… you could try a smaller swatch to get a better idea of how it works before you start the shawl. Just cast on a multiple of 3 and make sure it is an odd number… like 15 or 21.
