4 Color Free Baby Blanket Crochet Pattern

A few weeks ago, one of my closest friends welcomed the most beautiful baby boy. Obviously, I couldn’t wait to get started on crocheting a baby blanket to match his adorable animal-themed nursery. The room is a mix of soft sage green, warm taupe, cozy browns, and a pop of cheerful yellow—so, of course, I had to find yarn in those exact shades. I decided on an off-white background to keep it light and airy, then added stripes in all 4 colors to bring the whole design together. I am so happy with how it turned out and I think you guys will love crocheting this blanket too!

An Easy Blanket Pattern for Beginner Crocheters

Of course, I wanted to make sure that this baby blanket pattern was beginner-friendly and easy to share. That’s why I went with the Suzette stitch. Why is it called the Suzette stitch? No idea—maybe someone named Suzette invented it? Anyway, it’s a really easy stitch with a one-row repeat: you just make a single crochet and a double crochet in the same stitch, skip the next stitch, and keep going like that down the row. Besides being beginner friendly, I love this stitch for crochet blankets because it’s reversible. This means the the blanket will look great on both sides! The Suzette stitch is also a dense crochet stitch, so your baby blanket will be cozy and warm!

I created a YouTube tutorial to help guide you through crocheting the blanket. Even though the stitch is simple, it can be helpful to see exactly how it’s done. In the video, I also show you how to change colors for the stripes and add a single crochet border to tidy up the edges. The border also helps hide the loose ends from the color changes, so you won’t need to spend a lot of time weaving them in.

Choosing Yarn to Crochet Your Baby Blanket

For this blanket, I used one of my favorite yarns for baby blankets – Mighty Stitch from We Crochet. I love how soft it feels to the touch. It’s also machine washable, and comes in a large range of shades—so finding the perfect colors for this blanket was easy! Mighty Stitch is a worsted weight yarn made mostly of acrylic, with a some superwash wool for added warmth and softness. The recommended hook size is I to K, but I went down to a size H hook since I know the fibres loosen up a bit after blocking.

When choosing yarn to crochet your own baby blanket, there are a few things to keep in mind. First, make sure it’s super soft since babies have sensitive skin. You’ll also want to pick a yarn that’s machine-washable, because baby blankets tend to get messy and new parents don’t have a lot of time for hand washing. It’s also a good idea to choose a yarn that’s durable, so it holds up through lots of cuddles and washes. And of course, try to avoid yarns that shed or feel rough. I’ve listed a few alternatives below that I think would work great for this blanket.

Repeat rows 5-20 four more times and then work one more row in A for symmetry (so that the bottom and top both have 4 rows of color A). Continue to Border and Finishing.

To change colors seamlessly:

Work the last SC of the row in the old color but pull through the last loop of the SC with the new color. CH 1 with new color and continue to crochet the next row with the new color.

Border & Finishing

After completing the final row, add a border by single crocheting around the perimeter of the blanket as follows.

  • SC into each stitch of the final row. Make 3 SC in the last stitch of the row before crocheting down the side so that the corner lays flat.
  • Continue to SC evenly along the border:
    • For the side edges: Make 1SC into the side of each row. You can crochet over the loose ends from the color changes instead of weaving them in.
    • For the bottom edge: SC into each ch of the foundation chain.
    • Corners: Make 3 SC into the last stitch of each edge.
  • After completing the first round, do not join to the first stitch. Instead, continue working single crochet stitches directly over each single crochet from the first round. This will create a sturdier border and help conceal the loose ends along the sides more effectively.
  • Finish: Join to the first sc of the 2nd round with a slip stitch, cut the yarn, and weave in any remaining loose ends.

Wet or steam block to measurements so that the blanket lays flat and then weave in any remaining loose ends.
